Our recommended approach on every single roof job — without exception — is a full tear-off installation. This is the Legacy standard, and it's rooted in a simple principle: a metal roof should be the last roof you ever install. If that's the goal, it makes sense to build it right from the very base layer. Removing the existing shingles exposes the deck, allowing us to inspect every board, replace any rot or damage, and build a complete roofing system that will outlast everything above it.
It's the only way to install full ice and water shield underlayment — the moisture barrier that protects your home at the eaves, valleys, and penetrations where ice damming causes the most damage. In Ontario's climate, this isn't a luxury. It's the difference between a roof that performs and one that eventually fails.

The Budget-Conscious Option
Installation Over Shingles
In the right circumstances, standing seam can be installed directly over existing shingles — a viable option that eliminates tear-off costs and reduces project time. We assess every roof individually before recommending this approach.
Over-shingle installation is only offered where we can confirm the existing roof is structurally sound, the shingle layer is flat and stable, and the deck below shows no signs of moisture damage. We won't recommend it where it isn't the right call — that's not how we operate.
It's a legitimate option that many of our clients choose. It simply comes with a different warranty structure, and we're upfront about that from the start.

Exposed fastener gets a reputation as the "budget option" — but a budget system installed carelessly is still a budget system. The quality of the installation matters as much as the system itself.
At Legacy, we don't have a two-tier approach. Whether we're installing standing seam on a heritage property or exposed fastener on a drive shed, every job gets the same attention to detail. Panels are laid straight. Fasteners are driven to the correct torque — not over-driven, not under-driven. Trim work is clean and finished properly.
We've seen too many exposed fastener roofs fail early — not because of the system, but because of poor installation. Backing out screws, blown washers, improperly overlapped panels. That's not what we do.
Our recommended approach on every exposed fastener job is identical to our standing seam standard: full tear-off, full ice and water shield, deck inspection and repair where needed.
